Elderly Friendly
Seminar on Elderly-friendly Home Improvement
Jan 2023
A workshop on elderly-friendly homes was held for the elderly affected by the Urban Renewal Authority’s redevelopment projects. These attendees included owner-occupiers and tenants who had to prepare for relocation. Through an interactive workshop, designers and occupational therapists provided information that equipped the attendees with a better understanding of elderly-friendly home design, suitable materials, design details, equipment, gerontechnology, etc. The workshop raised the attendees’ awareness of home safety and helped them create new, suitable homes.
The attendees were highly engaged and shared with the speakers (occupational therapists and designers) their experiences of falling at home. A woman in her 70s said that her 80-something-year-old husband had fallen at home, ended up in hospital for half a year, and then been referred to a residential care home. You can imagine how common the issue of elderly people falling at home is.
